The laughter isn't necessarily physical. You might be so enraged and humiliated that you are imagining people are laughing at you.

I understand that it can be defended, but it's a small change and it seems quite strange in a stone hovel in the middle of the desert that you suddenly imagine hearing laughter.

It's not big, and it's not pressing, necessary or urgent. But it seems to be a quick little change which would keep annoying people like me from frowning when I notice it.
